贈衛八處士 To my Retired Friend Wei

杜甫 Du Fu

It is almost as hard for friends to meet
rén shēng bù xiāng jiàn ,
As for the morning and evening stars.
dòng rú cān yǔ shāng ,
Tonight then is a rare event,
jīn xī fù hé xī ?
Joining, in the candlelight,
gòng cǐ dēng zhú guāng 。
Two men who were young not long ago
shǎo zhuàng néng jǐ shí ?
But now are turning grey at the temples.
bìn fà gè yǐ cāng 。
访
...To find that half our friends are dead
fǎng jiù bàn wèi guǐ ,
Shocks us, burns our hearts with grief.
jīng hū rè zhōng cháng 。
We little guessed it would be twenty years
yān zhī èr shí zài ,
Before I could visit you again.
zhòng shàng jūn zi táng 。
When I went away, you were still unmarried;
xī bié jūn wèi hūn ,
But now these boys and girls in a row
ér nǚ hū chéng xíng ;
Are very kind to their father's old friend.
yí rán jìng fù zhí ,
They ask me where I have been on my journey;
wèn wǒ lái hé fāng 。
And then, when we have talked awhile,
wèn dá nǎi wèi yǐ ,
They bring and show me wines and dishes,
qū ér luó jiǔ jiāng 。
Spring chives cut in the night-rain
yè yǔ jiǎn chūn jiǔ ,
And brown rice cooked freshly a special way.
xīn chuī jiān huáng liáng 。
...My host proclaims it a festival,
zhǔ chēng huì miàn nán ,
He urges me to drink ten cups –
yī jǔ lèi shí shāng ;
But what ten cups could make me as drunk
shí shāng yì bù zuì ,
As I always am with your love in my heart?
gǎn zi gù yì zhǎng 。
...Tomorrow the mountains will separate us;
míng rì gé shān yuè ,
After tomorrow-who can say?
shì shì liǎng máng máng 。
