佳人 Alone in Her Beauty

杜甫 Du Fu

Who is lovelier than she?
jué dài yǒu jiā rén ,
Yet she lives alone in an empty valley.
yōu jū zài kōng gǔ ;
She tells me she came from a good family
zì yún liáng jiā zi ,
Which is humbled now into the dust.
líng luò yī cǎo mù 。
...When trouble arose in the Kuan district,
guān zhōng xī sàng luàn ,
Her brothers and close kin were killed.
xiōng dì zāo shā lù ;
What use were their high offices,
guān gāo hé zú lùn ?
Not even shielding their own lives? –
bù dé shōu gǔ ròu 。
The world has but scorn for adversity;
shì qíng è shuāi xiē ,
Hope goes out, like the light of a candle.
wàn shì suí zhuǎn zhú 。
婿
Her husband, with a vagrant heart,
fū xù qīng báo ér ,
Seeks a new face like a new piece of jade;
xīn rén měi rú yù 。
And when morning-glories furl at night
hé hūn shàng zhī shí ,
宿
And mandarin-ducks lie side by side,
yuān yāng bù dú sù ;
All he can see is the smile of the new love,
dàn jiàn xīn rén xiào ,
While the old love weeps unheard.
nà wén jiù rén kū ?
The brook was pure in its mountain source,
zài shān quán shuǐ qīng ,
But away from the mountain its waters darken.
chū shān quán shuǐ zhuó 。
...Waiting for her maid to come from selling pearls
shì bì mài zhū huí ,
For straw to cover the roof again,
qiān luó bǔ máo wū 。
She picks a few flowers, no longer for her hair,
zhāi huā bù chā fà ,
And lets pine-needles fall through her fingers,
cǎi bǎi dòng yíng jū 。
And, forgetting her thin silk sleeve and the cold,
tiān hán cuì xiù báo ,
She leans in the sunset by a tall bamboo.
rì mù yǐ xiū zhú 。
