宿業師山房待丁大不至 At the Mountain-lodge of the Buddhist Priest Ye Waiting in Vain for my Friend Ding

孟浩然 Meng Haoran

西
Now that the sun has set beyond the western range,
xī yáng dù xī lǐng ,
Valley after valley is shadowy and dim....
qún hè shū yǐ míng ;
And now through pine-trees come the moon and the chill of evening,
sōng yuè shēng yè liáng ,
And my ears feel pure with the sound of wind and water
fēng quán mǎn qīng tīng 。
Nearly all the woodsmen have reached home,
qiáo rén guī yù jǐn ,
Birds have settled on their perches in the quiet mist....
yān niǎo qī chū dìng 。
宿
And still – because you promised – I am waiting for you, waiting,
zhī zi qī sù lái ,
Playing lute under a wayside vine.
gū qín hòu luó jìng 。
