夢遊天姥吟留別 Tianmu Mountain Ascended in a Dream

李白 Li Bai

A seafaring visitor will talk about Japan,
hǎi kè tán yíng zhōu ,
Which waters and mists conceal beyond approach;
yān tāo wēi máng xìn nán qiú 。
But Yueh people talk about Heavenly Mother Mountain,
yuè rén yǔ tiān lǎo ,
Still seen through its varying deeps of cloud.
yún ní míng miè huò kě dǔ 。
In a straight line to heaven, its summit enters heaven,
tiān lǎo lián tiān xiàng tiān héng ,
Tops the five Holy Peaks, and casts a shadow through China
shì bá wǔ yuè yǎn chì chéng ;
With the hundred-mile length of the Heavenly Terrace Range,
tiān tái sì wàn bā qiān zhàng ,
Which, just at this point, begins turning southeast.
duì cǐ yù dào dōng nán qīng 。
...My heart and my dreams are in Wu and Yueh
wǒ yù yīn zhī mèng wú yuè ,
And they cross Mirror Lake all night in the moon.
yī yè fēi dù jìng hú yuè 。
And the moon lights my shadow
hú yuè zhào wǒ yǐng ,
And me to Yan River –
sòng wǒ zhì shàn xī ;
宿
With the hermitage of Xie still there
xiè gōng sù chù jīn shàng zài ,
And the monkeys calling clearly over ripples of green water.
lù shuǐ dàng yàng qīng yuán tí 。
I wear his pegged boots
jiǎo zhe xiè gōng jī ,
Up a ladder of blue cloud,
shēn dēng qīng yún tī 。
Sunny ocean half-way,
bàn bì jiàn hǎi rì ,
Holy cock-crow in space,
kōng zhōng wén tiān jī 。
Myriad peaks and more valleys and nowhere a road.
qiān yán wàn hè lù bù dìng ,
Flowers lure me, rocks ease me. Day suddenly ends.
mí huā yǐ shí hū yǐ míng 。
Bears, dragons, tempestuous on mountain and river,
xióng páo lóng yín yīn yán quán ,
Startle the forest and make the heights tremble.
lì shēn lín xī jīng céng diān 。
Clouds darken with darkness of rain,
yún qīng qīng xī yù yǔ ,
Streams pale with pallor of mist.
shuǐ dàn dàn xī shēng yān 。
The Gods of Thunder and Lightning
liè quē pī lì ,
Shatter the whole range.
qiū luán bēng cuī ,
The stone gate breaks asunder
dòng tiān shí shàn ,
Venting in the pit of heaven,
hōng rán zhōng kāi ;
An impenetrable shadow.
qīng míng hào dàng bù jiàn dǐ ,
耀
...But now the sun and moon illumine a gold and silver terrace,
rì yuè zhào yào jīn yín tái 。
And, clad in rainbow garments, riding on the wind,
ní wèi yī xī fēng wèi mǎ ,
Come the queens of all the clouds, descending one by one,
yún zhī jūn xī fēn fēn ér lái xià ;
With tigers for their lute-players and phoenixes for dancers.
hǔ gǔ sè xī luán huí chē 。
Row upon row, like fields of hemp, range the fairy figures.
xiān zhī rén xī liè rú má 。
I move, my soul goes flying,
hū hún jì yǐ pò dòng ,
I wake with a long sigh,
huǎng jīng qǐ ér zhǎng jiē 。
My pillow and my matting
wéi jué shí zhī zhěn xí ,
Are the lost clouds I was in.
shī xiàng lái zhī yān xiá 。
...And this is the way it always is with human joy:
shì jiān xíng lè yì rú cǐ ,
Ten thousand things run for ever like water toward the east.
gǔ lái wàn shì dōng liú shuǐ 。
And so I take my leave of you, not knowing for how long.
bié jūn qù xī hé shí hái ?
鹿
...But let me, on my green slope, raise a white deer
qiě fàng bái lù qīng yá jiān 。
访
And ride to you, great mountain, when I have need of you.
xū xíng jí qí fǎng míng shān ,
Oh, how can I gravely bow and scrape to men of high rank and men of high office
ān néng cuī méi zhé yāo shì quán guì ,
使
Who never will suffer being shown an honest-hearted face!
shǐ wǒ bù dé kāi xīn yán ?
