登岳陽樓 On the Gate-tower at Youzhou

杜甫 Du Fu

I had always heard of Lake Dongting –
xī wén dòng tíng shuǐ ,
And now at last I have climbed to this tower.
jīn shàng yuè yáng lóu 。
With Wu country to the east of me and Chu to the south,
wú chǔ dōng nán chè ,
I can see heaven and earth endlessly floating.
gān kūn rì yè fú 。
...But no word has reached me from kin or friends.
qīn péng wú yī zì ,
I am old and sick and alone with my boat.
lǎo bìng yǒu gū zhōu 。
North of this wall there are wars and mountains –
róng mǎ guān shān běi ,
And here by the rail how can I help crying?
píng xuān tì sì liú 。
