長沙過賈誼宅 On Passing Jia Yi's House in Changsha

劉長卿 Liu Changqing

Here, where you spent your three years' exile,
sān nián zhé huàn cǐ qī chí ,
To be mourned in Chu ten thousand years,
wàn gǔ wéi liú chǔ kè bēi 。
Can I trace your footprint in the autumn grass –
qiū cǎo dú xún rén qù hòu ,
Or only slanting sunlight through the bleak woods?
hán lín kōng jiàn rì xié shí 。
If even good Emperor Wen was cold-hearted,
hàn wén yǒu dào ēn yóu báo ,
Could you hope that the dull river Xiang would understand you,
xiāng shuǐ wú qíng diào qǐ zhī ?
These desolate waters, these taciturn mountains,
jì jì jiāng shān yáo luò chù ,
When you came, like me, so far away?
lián jūn hé shì dào tiān yá ?
