遣悲懷之二 An Elegy II

元稹 Yuan Zhen

We joked, long ago, about one of us dying,
xī rì xì yán shēn hòu shì ,
But suddenly, before my eyes, you are gone.
jīn cháo dōu dào yǎn qián lái 。
Almost all your clothes have been given away;
yī shang yǐ shī xíng kàn jǐn ,
线
Your needlework is sealed, I dare not look at it....
zhēn xiàn yóu cún wèi rěn kāi 。
I continue your bounty to our men and our maids –
shàng xiǎng jiù qíng lián bì pú ,
Sometimes, in a dream, I bring you gifts.
yě céng yīn mèng sòng qián cái 。
...This is a sorrow that all mankind must know –
chéng zhī cǐ hèn rén rén yǒu ,
But not as those know it who have been poor together.
pín jiàn fū qī bǎi shì āi 。
